Day 1
Day 2
Tuesday’s whirlwind of activities took our students from the local to the interplanetary as we again showed them that they can make a world of difference. From community engagement clearing and planting at Crofton Fields and the Isabella Heap, to learning about the galaxy in our amazing new planetarium, students had the chance to see that the universe is awe-inspiring but that we are never too small to make a difference.
Furthermore, in visits to Newcastle Central Mosque and Newcastle Reform Synagogue, we saw another way in which perspective matters: learning that on the outside we can seem different, but that beyond this we have much in common. These visits and the understanding they promote are a real strength of PD Week – a vital part of building the community we all need to thrive.
The synagogue and mosque visits – what a hit! They were fascinating and the students were so engaged.
Day 3
PD Week took our students for adventures far afield today. Every year, our Year 8 students have the opportunity of a three-day residential at Kingswood. The courage to try something new, and the encouragement of their team-mates underpin the success of this endeavour. Ultimately, the challenges our students undertake and the character these build, become a true highlight of their school careers.
Day 4
Time travel was the order of the day on day four of PD Week. As more of our Year 7 ventured to Beamish to explore life from 1913 to the 1950s, others learned about the role of Blyth in the Allied Victory of World War II. Altogether, they saw what a rich heritage they have to be proud of in the North East. Meanwhile, Year 9 students spent the day at Blyth’s exciting Energy Central Learning Hub, finding out about the technology and opportunities of the future. Personal Development Week is about opening eyes and minds: today, students saw both how achievements of the past have shaped the world we live in, and the many ways in which they can shape the world of tomorrow.
Day 5
Our final day of PD Week and the energy continued to flow with an amazing Sports Day for Year 9 and new skills of baking focaccia, making eco planters, investigating crime scenes and fantastic team-building activities for Year 7. Year 8 students not on residential, visited Northumbria Zoo – always a favourite – and others prepared for a safer summer with vital input on water safety from Blyth Lifeguards.
As PD Week closes for another year, all that remains is for us to reflect upon the further steps Bede students have taken towards ‘Life in all its fullness’ (John 10.10) and to thank the many community partners who have helped them on their way. We and they are truly grateful.
