Personal Development Update: 07/06/2024

As the country debates the policies of our national parties in the run-up to Election 2024, we want to make sure Bede students understand this important aspect of our democracy.  Therefore, in PD and more widely, we will recap how British Parliamentary is organised, explore where to find reliable information, and report what the candidates are saying.  Most excitingly, we will run our own mock election, with Sixth Form candidates standing to represent the main parties and other budding politicians canvassing support, polling student opinion and manning the polling stations.

To begin this process, today’s PD session recapped how much political decisions really affect our lives – from addressing climate change, to regulating water companies, to assigning National Service.  We also contrasted our British value of democracy to systems of dictatorship under which millions of other people their age live.

Finally, we covered how a vote turns into representation by an MP at Westminster, and how our older students can register to make sure their vote and their voice counts.  Next week, students will hear from our Bede candidates – please watch this space and the newsletters for more on Election 2024: Bede decides!
