Exploring The Burrell Collection & Kelvingrove

Friday 13th December saw a very early start for 49 of Bede’s Year 11,12 & 13 Fine Art students and accompanying staff. After a brief stop-off en-route students were given the opportunity to explore and engage with an eclectic mix of art at two major collections.

The Burrell Collection holds treasures from all over the world. Highlights include one of the most significant collections of Chinese art in the UK and objects from ancient civilisations, including Roman sculpture and Egyptian pottery more than 2,000 years old. There are medieval treasures including stained glass, arms and armour, some of the finest tapestries anywhere in the world, as well as paintings by renowned 19th century French artists like Manet, Cézanne and Degas.

Kelvingrove also houses a huge art collection in state-of-the-art galleries displaying an astonishing 8000 objects. They from many art movements and periods of history and much more with the most famous painting on display, Salvador Dali’s masterpiece ‘Christ of St John of the Cross’.

Our students were a huge credit to themselves and the Academy. They engaged with the day fully throughout and it was a pleasure to give them the opportunity to experience finest quality art first hand and see their very positive reaction to it.
