BRITISH VALUES Democracy: use it so you don’t lose it.
This week, we have been preparing for the coming elections to Northumberland’s Youth Cabinet and the National Youth Parliament. Members of the Youth Cabinet control an actual budget and decide how this will be invested in initiatives for young people across Northumberland. The Youth Parliament meets to determine such priorities and to bring the interests of young people to the attention of policy makers.
We are proud to have three candidates standing for election to the Parliament. In our PD session, they presented their manifestos, alongside candidates from other schools. Students were also reminded of the nature of British democracy – and that, across the globe and throughout History, government in the interest of the people rather than the elite, is the exception, not the rule. In this light – and in light of recent events in Iran – students were encouraged to value the democratic system they live in and to use the vote they have so that they do not lose it.
All Bede students will have the opportunity to vote in school next Wednesday, and to also complete a survey on their priorities for local planning.
